Gourds such as these have been a staple of artistry and craftsmanship in South America for over 3,000 years. These dried gourds from Peru are brought to markets and sold to local artists. From there, they are cleaned, dyed, and then a pattern is penciled onto the ornament. After the initial design is penciled on, the shell is hand carved and burned with a burning stick. This burning method can achieve 9 different shades from brown to black. The final step is using a white pigment to highlight the etched lines in the ornament.
